JUNETEENTH LOS ANGELES (A.K.A.: Juneteenth LA)
Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Juneteenth independence day, is an American holiday that commemorates the June 19, 1865 announcement of the abolition of slavery in Texas, and more generally the emancipation of enslaved African Americans throughout the former Confederate States of America, outside Native American lands. Texas was the most remote of the slave states, and the Emancipation Proclamation of January 1, 1863 was not enforced there until after the Confederacy collapsed. The name of the observance is a portmanteau of "June" and "nineteenth", the date of its celebration.
At first celebration involved church-centered community gatherings in Texas. It spread across the South and became more commercialized in the 1920s and 1930s. Often the centerpiece was a food festival. A third stage was reached in the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s, when the focus became the story of struggle for postwar civil rights. The 1970s saw a fourth stage, which returned the focus to African American freedom and arts. By the 21st century, Juneteenth was celebrated in most major cities across the United States. Activists are pushing Congress to recognize Juneteenth as a national holiday. Juneteenth is recognized as a state holiday or special day of observance in 46 of the 50 states.
Observance is primarily in local celebrations. Traditions include public readings of the Emancipation Proclamation, singing traditional songs such as "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot", "Lift Every Voice and Sing", and reading of works by noted African-American writers such as Ralph Ellison and Maya Angelou. Celebrations include rodeos, street fairs, cookouts, family reunions, park parties, historical reenactments, and Miss Juneteenth contests. The Mascogos, descendants of Black Seminoles of Coahuila, Mexico, also celebrate Juneteenth.

Juneteenth Los Angeles Celebration, Including A Community Bicycle Ride/Walk/Run and Festival
Inner City Cycling Connection, Inc. (IC3) has partnered with the West East Community Access/WE CAN FOUNDATION to have a Juneteenth Los Angeles (A.K.A.: Juneteenth LA) community bicycle ride/walk, bike festival, and health fair expo. The Los Angeles celebration of this African-American liberation day will be a three day event in Leimert Park in the month of June. The three themes for this event are:
1) Celebrating our culture, heroes, and health
2) Riding for health, justice, and equality
3) Exposing our community to the rewards and benefits of cycling
4) Honoring the life of Major Taylor, Colonel Young, a Buffalo Soldier from the 9th and 10th Calvary, and the US 25th Infantry Buffalo Soldier Cycling Regiment
Both IC3 and the WE CAN FOUNDATION believe that this celebration will enlighten our community about Juneteenth and its importance to American society. In addition to the cultural aspect, IC3 will incorporate cycling, health, and fitness into this event by having a community bicycle ride, honoring Marshall W. Taylor (A.K.A.: Major Taylor), paying tribute to the US Army 25th Infantry Regiment (A.K.A.: The Cycling Buffalo Soldiers), and Honoring Colonel Charles Young. Both Major Taylor and the Cycling Buffalo Soldiers are African-American heroes that need their stories to be told. This Juneteenth Los Angeles event will be use as a platform to highlight the contributions of these men.
