VETERANS CANCER COMMUNITY RIDE/WALK/RUN

"THEY HAVE SERVED US, NOW IS TIME TO SERVE THEM!!"

Information From The Department of Veterans Affairs

A topic that is closest to Inner City Cycling Connection, Inc. (IC3) Founder and President Don Harris heart is prostate cancer in Veterans.  As a Vietnam War combat Veteran, Don feels obligated to do something to bring awareness to the most common cancer among US Veterans.   According to the department of Veterans Affairs, over 12,000 Veterans were diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2014 to join more than 200,000 Veteran survivors.

Because its incidence increases with age and nearly half of Veterans are at least 65 years old, the clinical and economic burdens of prostate cancer are expected to increase.  Fortunately, over 80% of these men will have local disease with 5-year cancer-specific survivals of 98%.3.   Even among the small population of Veterans whose disease returns after treatment, less than 1 in 5 will die of prostate cancer within 10 years.  Thus, most men live with prostate cancer and its sequel rather than die from it.

In 2003, the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) outlined a National Cancer Strategy (VHA Directive 2003-034) indicating priorities for quality cancer care and access to care for all Veterans with cancer.  Importantly, this Directive recognized prostate cancer as a service-connected condition for men exposed to the herbicide Agent Orange.  For all of these reasons, understanding the survival rate of prostate cancer victims and the treatments needed to increase it is of paramount importance.

IC3 has organize a community ride to help bring awareness to prostate and other forms of cancer in US Veterans.  The ride will be done in conjunction with the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Veteran Health Department, the American Cancer Society, the Centers for Disease Control,  the National Cancer Institute,  and  other professional/voluntary associations that are heavily involve with increasing the survival of prostate cancer victims .  Some of the proceed generated from the community ride will be donated to the respective organizations to assist with our goals of

1)  Increasing awareness about cancer in Veterans, it causes, and it treatments

2)  Increasing cancer research and development

3)  Raising awareness of the needs of Veteran cancer survivors
